Literary Belles

Great Bookham Belles WI Book Club embarked on a twin destination tour this weekend – Oxford and Windsor. All set off in the minibus and reached Oxford in time for lunch followed by a whistle stop walking tour. The tour featured many of the colleges of Oxford University including Trinity, Balliol and Christ Church where Belles were awed by the architecture, chapels, history, tradition and vibe of Oxford. Special highlights were visiting the haunts where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien frequented, discovering the inspiration for C.S. Lewis Narnia’s Mr. Tumnus, Aslan and The Lamp, going to Brown’s Café from the Inspector Morse series and Evensong performed by the choristers of Christ Church.

Day 2 saw the Belles wandering through the quaint streets of Windsor in glorious sunshine, under the gaze of the Castle, taking in the sights, the sounds and the cakes! Then across the bridge to the other side of the Thames to view Christopher Wren’s home and to another awe inspiring educational institution, Eton College.

The weekend proved to be, beyond a doubt, a fantastic success leaving the Monday Book Club planning the next trip and the next and the next…
