Surrey Centenary Baton Event

Wednesday 20th May saw the arrival of the WI Centenary Baton to the Old Barn Hall in Great Bookham after having left Anglesey – home of the very first WI meeting in the UK –  on the 1st Jan 2014, to start its long journey visiting 69 Federations.  The Baton was ‘welcomed’ in by one of Bookham’s older members and at the end of the proceedings was taken out by the Presidents of Bookham’s two newest WIs, Great Bookham Belles and Bookham Butterflies, representing the future.

Representatives of Great Bookham Belles attended the day long event which featured:

  • a heritage display showing the WI through the years, craft displays by various local WIs
  • a Craft Competition – ‘hearts’ being the theme
  • craft demonstrations of hanging baskets, stump work, crochet and lace making
  • a bring and buy of craft materials.

The Baton will reach it’s final destination on 4th June 2015 at the Royal Albert Hall, where the centenary Annual Meeting will be taking place.
